How To Take The Perfect Pet Picture With Santa
I pulled some of my connections and secured this EXCLUSIVE interview with the “Big Guy” on how to take a perfect pet picture with Santa.
STP: Now Santa, what is the secret for getting that perfect pet picture with you?
Santa: Well Smart T. the most important thing I can tell you, your friends and their parents is that everyone has to relax and be patient. For many animals this is a scary experience. “Who is this stranger?” “Why do I have to be here?” Give your pet time to relax, sniff and get used to the situation. There is no need to hurry up and take the picture. I am sure my helper, who is filling in for me that day, understands and loves animals and is willing to take his time letting everyone get used to the situation. Given time, the pets will settle down and relax, but the humans need to settle down too. I advise all my helpers to watch for the pets’ anxiety clues such as yawning or lip licking. If they feel the pet is just too nervous they will invite the parents to take part in the picture too. Either way it is a great picture.
STP: What about dressing your pet up in holiday attire?
Santa: If the parents want to do that, practice before you go to take the picture. Beside the anxiety of having to sit next to a total stranger or even on their lap is to have a headband with reindeer horns plopped on your head. Let your pets get used to the sweater or headgear at home so that it not a complete surprise when you do it at picture time. And what is even better, as you know Smart T., is to reward your pet with a little treat when they have on that article of clothing.
STP: You got me there Santa! We do love our treats! What other advice do you have for my readers?
Santa: Ho! Ho! Ho! Well I have to say, “Don’t Press Your Luck!” If you have five dogs and want them all in one picture - someone is not going to be looking at the camera, no matter how many times you take that picture. Maybe you have a pet that is camera shy and will turn their head every time they see the camera. Try distracting them with a squeaky toy or a member of the family. And most important of all - just live in the moment. Never, ever, yell at your pet for not wanting to have their picture taken with me. Why even some human children, don’t want that! Enjoy the experience because no matter what happens, you will always have a story to tell.
STP: Thank you Santa for taking your time during your very busy season to talk to me today. Can you tell me if I am on the Good Boy List this year?
Santa: Oh Smart T. you’ll have to wait and find out on Christmas Eve.
