On The Move

Dear Mr. Smart T. Pants:

Recently my humans began packing up all of our things and putting them in boxes. They said that we are moving to a new house. I am a little nervous about this. Here at my old house I know where everything is and have my own routine and way of doing things. Do you have some advice for me and my humans to make the change a little easier?

P.S. I do not like change

Dear Jack:

Moving is a big change for everybody. Even if it is a happy change, it can be stressful for both you and your humans. Now I know you may not like this, but on moving day, you really should be in quiet relaxing place and not in the middle of the action. Maybe you can stay with a friend that day or in a bedroom with the door shut. Moving is noisy with a lot of people carrying heavy things and you just don’t want to be in the middle of that! Your humans should check in on you and be sure to walk and feed you at the same time even if there is a lot of “stuff” happening.

When you get to your new home, it maybe tempting to explore it all at one time. All those new smells! But that can be a bit overwhelming. Have your humans set up a “home base” for you. A room that has all those things you love - your bed, toys, blanket - anything that is comforting to you. Then little by little you can explore the rest of the house. Just think about how exciting and fun that will be.

Since you do not like change and let’s face it not many pets or humans do, your humans should keep your routine as normal as possible. Feeding, walking, bedtime should try to remain as close to your routine as it is now.

Jack - it is going to be okay. Give yourself time and you will find that you love your new home. Remember, you will be with your humans who love you and that is the most important thing of all.

P.S. Make sure your humans change your tags or microchip as soon as you get there.
