Seize the Day or the Stick
Dear Mr. Smart T. Pants:
This weekend it was so beautiful outside! I just wanted to run and play and explore everything in my backyard. I was so absorbed enjoying all the smells and sights that I forgot that I was outside to do my “business”. When I came inside I realized that I had to go and I did. My humans were not happy with me. But the world is so exciting for a puppy like me. Do you have any tips for puppies or humans on how to handle this?
Loving Life
Dear Loving:
Yes the world is so exciting isn’t it? Sometimes I think the humans do not take the time to enjoy it. As a puppy it is your job to show them the thrill of discovering a big stick or chasing a butterfly. Your joy of running through the freshly mowed grass, exploring brightly colored leaves or protecting the yard from that bug should help them realize that there are so many simple pleasures to enjoy.
But it is important that you take care of “business”. So I recommend that you do that as soon as you go out. This way your humans immediately are put into a good mood and there will be no accidents in the house. Then you can show them all of the other great things in your yard.
Humans, as you can see puppies are easily distracted. When you let them out, you must stay with them to be sure that they do their “business” and do not become distracted. Then be sure to praise, praise and praise again.
Enjoy life my puppy friend - there are so many wonderful things to explore - especially with a human by your side.
