Everybody Needs A Little Space
Dear Mr. Pants:
I enjoy having a best friend. We are about the same age and activity level so we enjoy playing and cuddling together. But I know that there are other cats out there that prefer a solitary lifestyle. Is there a secret on how to keep everyone happy - including the humans?
Louie
Dear Louie:
I am so happy that you get to share your household with your best friend. But as you mentioned that is not always the case. I think the main thing for humans to remember is that everybody, at times, needs their own space. And after a year when everybody was home A LOT more than normal, they certainly should be able to understand and appreciate that.
No matter how much you love your “bestie” you need a quiet place of your own to contemplate what type of food you prefer or which squirrel is annoying you the most. And although humans make a big deal out of sharing, cats prefer to have their own stuff. Separate food and water bowls as well as scratching posts and most importantly litter boxes are preferable.
Humans should take some time to observe their feline friends and see what they prefer. This way they can create the “purfect” happy place for each cat. Each kitty is different even if they do have a best friend. And let’s face it you do make your own rules!
