Want A Lift?

Dear Mr. Smart T. Pants:

I love riding in the car with my human. We usually go to so many interesting places like the park or a trail or even to visit another human. Let’s not talk about the times we have to go to the Vet. When I ride in the car I like to hang my head completely out the window or move around in the back seat. But now my humans insist that I wear a seat belt. Why do I have to do that?

Riding Free

Distracted driving is bad for pets and humans.

Distracted driving is bad for pets and humans.

Dear Free:

Your humans are really looking out for you. Riding in the car is so much fun but can also be dangerous if you are not wearing a seat belt or are traveling in your crate. First if the car stops short for any reason you can get thrown around the vehicle or even through the windshield. That would be horrible. Also in the event of an accident, emergency personnel may have to reach your human and your first reaction might be to protect them. That would impede the progress of getting to them. And if you are moving around, you actually can be a distraction to your human for they are unable to resist seeing what you are doing.

And you need to be careful with your head out the window. I know all of the smells are enticing, but if your head is out too far you might get something in your eyes. So try not to stick your head out too far or put on some goggles. Yes they do make them for dogs.

So Free you have great humans. They not only take you great places but make sure you get there safely as well. So you can forgive them about those Vet trips and maybe give them an extra dose of love and cuteness tonight.
