I really want to know - do dogs actually listen to us humans when we talk? Do you like it when we talk to you? Do you understand what we are saying? Should humans keep on talking?

Dear Wondering:

We dogs LOVE it when our humans talk to us. But I have to admit we like it the best when you mention words we know and enjoy such as “walk”, “treats” and “good dog”. But aren’t humans the same way? They like to hear the words “ice cream” better than “taxes”.

People that have pets know that we are the best listeners. You can tell us anything and we won’t judge you. If you need a sounding board and it helps to talk about the pros and cons out loud - do it with us. We are not going to interrupt you or tell you not to do it. We are just going to listen.

This is especially true for children. For years I have been a Reading Dog. I listen quietly as children practice their reading with me. I don’t care how long it takes them to read or if they don’t pronounce a word correctly right away. I am happy just to listen. And you know what? They like to read to me and look forward to it! Some who are afraid to read out loud have no fear of reading to me. But of course I am adorable.

And we don’t care when you talk to us. If you are making dinner and want to discuss recipes - we will listen. How about when you are on the treadmill? Tell us what you plan to do the rest of the day. Streaming a new show and want to mark snarky commentary? We will cuddle up and appreciate your sense of humor.

So Wondering, please keep on talking and tell your friends to talk too. Communication is the key in any relationship.
