Can I Be A Therapy Dog?

Dear Mr. Smart T. Pants:

I love people and I get really excited when I see them out on the streets or in the park. My owner thinks I would make a great therapy dog but there is one problem. I am a big red doberman and sometimes people seem to be afraid of me. Since you are a therapy dog, do you have any advice for me? Can I do it?

Leroy from Schwenksville

Dear Leroy:

Leroy, if this is something that you love and want to do, you should go for it. There are all sizes of therapy dogs - from Pomeranians to King Charles Spaniels to Goldens to Bull Mastiffs. And each of those has their benefits. Small dogs can be placed on hospitals beds. Big dogs are perfect wheelchair height. For therapy dogs it is all about your temperament and personality. I recommend that you and your owners sign up for a Therapy Dog training class such as one available through Comfort Caring Canines. This way you will learn if this is something that is right for you. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
