Missing You
Dear Mr. Smart T. Pants:
My beloved cat roommate recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She struggled with health issues lately, and was relieved that she would no longer need to take icky medicines or scary car rides for vet visits. She was grateful for a long, happy life, and even when she was weak at the end, she still purred away. But our human is so very sad. Can you remind humans that for cats, dogs and all animals, moving on is a part of life we accept, and that we still love them so deeply, even if we're not in the same place anymore?
Missing an Old Friend
Dear Old Friend:
First I am so sorry for your loss. Believe me if we animals could stay around forever with our humans we would certainly do so. But for our years of unconditional love, humans truly give us the greatest gift - freedom from pain when it is our time.
Each human will grieve for their pet in their own way and in their own time. NEVER let anyone diminish your feelings by saying, “Oh it was just a pet.” We are your family, your best friend and your heart animal. The one who listened to your troubles, rejoiced in your good times and provided cuddles to you on a cold night. But while you grieve try to remember the lessons we taught you and the love we shared. Maybe write a letter to us telling us how we changed your life. Plant some catnip or a tree in our honor. Tell stories about us and laugh. And when the time is right, open your home and your heart to a new friend. That is not disrespecting us - it is a continuation of our love for you. We know you will never forget us for we will be in your heart forever.
With Love,
Mr. Smart T. Pants
